Kinvara v Turloughmore........previous meetings

posted 7 May 2014, 13:30 by Garret Byrne
Kinvara and Turloughmore meet this Sunday in a do-or-die Senior Hurling Championship match. There is so much at stake, with the winner heading to the championship group stages, while the loser must face into a relegation group dogfight.
The two clubs will be meeting for the 9th time in SHC, with the Black and White having the advantage in the previous 8 meetings - they have won 6 of them, while Kinvara have only the 2 wins.

Here is a brief rundown of them all:
Kinvara had won the Intermediate title in 1966 and then were drawn to face the might of Turloughmore, the county senior winners for the previous 6 years (1961-1966). It was a massive task for us, and we lost on a scoreline of 6-10 to 2-4. (Castlegar later denied Turlough their seven in a row).

Kinvara shocked Sarsfields and KIltormer in the group stages to reach the quarter-finals. We never really got to grips to our opponents and lost to Turloughmore by 2-14 to 0-11 (they went on to win the final convincingly against Killimordaly 1-14 to 1-4).

A troublesome year for Kinvara, in which we struggled to even field. In the group we met and were no match for Turloughmore as we lost 1-16 to 0-6 (another relegation battle beckoned, but we avoided the drop by beating Abbey-Duniry).

After reaching the county semi-final in 1994, Kinvara experienced and survived relegation battles in the following two years of 1995 and 1996. We got back to winning ways in 1997 with a Group win over Turloughmore (1-11 to 1-10) - our first at this grade over our opponents.
Both sides had to meet again in a group play-off, with Turloughmore advancing by 1-20 to 2-13.

Another meeting against Turloughmore and another defeat (3-10 to 0-6). Relegation battle again for Kinvara, surviving by beating Mullagh.

We again met Turloughmore in the group stages and again lost (2-14 to 1-10). Relegation battle was again on, which we again, survived.

In the year we last reached the county final, Kinvara met Turloughmore in the group stages, and a nail-biting match went to the wire, with Kinvara scoring late to win narrowly (1-11 to 1-10) in Pearse Stadium
