20 years ago in the 1993 County Championship, Kinvara faced Castlegar in their opening group match. The seasiders had never beaten the former kingpins of Galway hurling, and this was to be their 5th ever meeting in the championship.
Heading into this season of 1993, Kinvara experienced a tough campaign in the previous year of 1992, losing all four group matches, finishing bottom, and just surviving the subsequent relegation battle.
And so to 1993. Kinvara were drawn in a group with Castlegar, Oranmore-Maree, Sarsfields, St. Thomas' and Gort.
The opening match was against Castlegar, and the city side were firm favourites to win this match. But Kinvara had other ideas.
A dramatic game in Kenny Park resulted in Kinvara winning on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-10. Here we will bring you the Connacht Tribune match report along with the team pic from the day.
Note: Manager for Kinvara in 1993 was Mike Burke, and he was assisted by our then new coach John McIntyre. John will also be on the sideline this Saturday evening, but this time in the green and white of Castlegar.
Kinvara followed up that win with results in the other matches as follows:
Kinvara 1-11 beat Castlegar 1-10, in Kenny Park
Oranmore-Maree 3-9 beat Kinvara 1-8, in Ballindereen
Sarsfields 0-14 beat Kinvara 0-9, in Craughwell
Kinvara 5-7 beat Gort 1-9, in Ardrahan
St. Thomas 0-8 beat Kinvara 0-6, in Ballindereen.
So, won 2 and lost 3, and failed to reach knockout stages, and avoided another relegation battle!
